Customers#

• Count your customer accounts and decide which ones you're moving (all, or active in the last X years)
• Passwords can't be migrated. Plan how customers will reactivate their accounts on day one (Shopify Plus includes a free bulk account invite tool through Plus support)
• Carry across marketing consent exactly as it is. Don't opt anyone in by accident
• Map customer tags, groups and any trade or VIP pricing to Shopify equivalents
• Decide where saved addresses and wishlists are coming from, and whether they're worth moving

Orders and history#

• Decide how far back order history needs to go, and why (customer accounts, returns, reporting)
• Choose the import method (for example Matrixify) and do a full test import on a development store
• Keep old order numbers searchable so customer service can find them
• Plan a final "delta" import of orders placed between the test import and launch
• Agree how returns and exchanges on pre-migration orders will be handled

Products and catalogue#

• Export every product, variant and SKU, and check the variant structure fits Shopify's option limits
• Map custom attributes to metafields or metaobjects before design starts
• Move all product images at full resolution, with alt text
• Keep URL handles as close to the old ones as possible
• Check bundles, kits and configurable products have a Shopify-native plan, not just an app

URLs, SEO and redirects#

• Crawl the old site and export every URL that gets traffic or has backlinks
• Build a 301 redirect for every product, collection, CMS page and blog post. Magento and Shopify URL structures are different, so almost nothing maps automatically
• Carry across meta titles and descriptions for your top pages
• Plan to resubmit the sitemap in Google Search Console on launch day
• Benchmark rankings and organic traffic before launch so you can compare after

Gift cards#

• Find out where gift cards actually live today: Magento, your POS or a third-party provider
• Get a list of live gift card balances and decide whether you're importing them or integrating the existing provider
• If you sell in more than one currency, check how a card bought in one currency is redeemed in another
• If cards are sold in-store as well as online, make sure both channels can redeem them
• Test purchase and redemption end to end in a sandbox before launch

Currencies, markets and tax#

• List every country you sell to and set up Shopify Markets for each
• Decide between automatic currency conversion and fixed prices per market (fixed pricing is a Plus feature)
• Decide how duties and import taxes are shown and charged for international orders
• Check tax settings and VAT registrations for every market
• Test checkout in each currency

Payments#

• Start Shopify Payments activation early. Identity checks for company directors and owners can take longer than you'd expect
• List every payment method customers use today (cards, PayPal, Klarna, Apple Pay and so on) and confirm each one is available in each market
• Run live test transactions before launch and confirm payouts arrive in the right bank account
• Turn off test mode. It's on the launch checklist for a reason

Integrations#

For each system connected to the store today, write down: what data flows in and out, who owns the account, whether a Shopify app exists, and who will set it up and test it.

• Plan how any running promotions carry through launch day

Tracking and analytics#

• Set up GA4 and ad platform conversions on the new store before launch, and check each conversion fires once
• Set up a consent platform and make sure tags respect it
• Annotate launch day in GA4 so the before and after are easy to compare
• Check your ad platforms are optimising to the right conversion after launch, not an old or empty one

• Developers and agencies get staff or collaborator access, never ownership
• Keep a written list of every system, who owns it and who can get in

• Compare conversion by device and by market against pre-launch
• Keep an eye on app conflicts. After one launch, customers kept getting logged out; the cause was an SEO app, not the theme
• Review which apps you actually still need
• Collect customer service questions and fix the causes, not just the answers
