Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the best in the company's history

Jambys

Jambys came to me a few weeks before Black Friday with a store that was slow, half broken and losing sales at checkout. Through Storetasker, I rebuilt it on Shopify Plus in six weeks. It went live in time, held up under peak traffic, and Jambys had the biggest Black Friday and Cyber Monday in its history.

Jambys is a Brooklyn brand that makes "Performance Inactivewear": loungewear engineered for doing absolutely nothing.

What it was costing

The store had got into a state, and the biggest sales weekend of the year was weeks away.

  • Slow pages

Pages took around 9 seconds to load, right before the weekend when every second counts.

  • Broken features

Parts of the store simply did not work, so shoppers hit dead ends.

  • A leaky checkout

The checkout was losing sales that had already been won.

What I changed, in order

There was no time to fix it piece by piece, and no room for a phased launch during peak. So I rebuilt it, with one test for every decision: will this be ready and solid for Black Friday?

  1. The foundation

I started from Horizon, Shopify's own theme, so I could move fast on a base that was already quick and well tested.

  2. One page per product

Jambys sells a lot of styles, sizes and colours. I used Shopify's Combined Listings to bring them together on single product pages, so shoppers pick a colour in one place instead of trawling through dozens of listings.

  3. The path to purchase

In short sprints, I reworked the product pages, the collection layouts and the route to checkout, and cut anything that wasn't essential.

  4. Tested before the traffic

Everything was live and tested before the Black Friday traffic arrived, so there were no fixes in the middle of the weekend.

What it measured

The store went live in time and held up under peak traffic. Jambys told me it was the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the company's history.
